Monument signs are a subcategory of freestanding signs. They are low to the ground rather than mounted high on a pole structure. The low profile look is sometimes preferred and sometimes mandated by ordinance.
For instance, the Malvern Avenue (Highway 270) Overlay District in Hot Springs and the Cantrell West (Highway 10) Overlay District in Little Rock both require monument signs, to be used by businesses.
Churches and office park developments often use monument signs by choice.
